What is the Eat Move Sleep Study?

We want to know if health behaviors (like diet, exercise, and sleep habits) can slow or stop cancer growth or spread. We also want to study how social and financial factors affect health behaviors and health outcomes.

By answering questions about your daily habits and allowing us to follow your health over time, you will help us improve recommendations for the millions of people who have been diagnosed with cancer.

This study is open to individuals who have been diagnosed with prostate, colorectal, kidney, or bladder cancer. In the future, we plan to expand this study to include individuals with other types of cancer.

We aim to enroll participants who represent everyone affected by cancer - all ages, races, ethnicities, and sexual orientations - to help everyone live healthier and longer.

Why is it important?

Data are limited on the role of health behaviors after diagnosis of cancer.

Data on cancer survivorship are especially limited among people from racial/ethnic minority groups.

Representation from all people and communities is important to promote health equity. This is especially critical because some cancers are more common or aggressive in certain racial or ethnic groups (e.g., prostate cancer among African American/Black men).

More research is needed to make evidence-based recommendations.

Our goals are to:

Improve our understanding about what specific foods, nutrients, exercise, or sleep factors affect quality of life and cancer progression.

Develop evidence-based health behavior guidelines for all people affected by cancer.

Improve our understanding on how social and financial factors affect health behaviors and health outcomes.

What will I be asked to do?

Joining the study involves 4 steps:
  1. Create a unique login and password
  2. Provide informed consent
  3. Complete online surveys once a year for up to three years (total ~ 3 hours the first year, and 1 hour in future years)
  4. Allow us to know how you are doing (your health and cancer status) over time by giving us permission to access your medical records
There is an optional component:
  • You may link a Fitbit to your study account to provide your physical activity data.

We can’t do this without you.

FAQs

How do I register for the study?
It's easy to register! You sign up with your name, email, password, and birth date. You'll get a confirmation email to verify your email, sign off on an electronic consent, and start taking surveys from the homepage.

Why do I have to sign a consent form?
Once you register, you'll be taken to the consent page. This is a research study, and the UCSF Committee on Human Research (also known as an IRB (Institutional Review Board) or Ethics Board) approves and regulates all research studies conducted at UCSF. These consent forms outline the study and exactly what your role will be.

How is the study organized?
For the main part of the Eat Move Sleep (EMOVES) study, you will be asked to complete surveys as part of an eVisit – several sections of easy-to-complete surveys. You will be asked to complete eVisits every year for up to three years. Surveys ask about diet, exercise, sleep quality, social and financial factors, cancer diagnosis and management, other health conditions, and quality-of-life. We also ask for your permission to routinely collect data from your medical records on cancer and other health outcomes.

What's expected of me?
Ideally, we want you to 1) answer the study's health-related questions each year for up to 3 years, 2) link us to your Fitbit if you have one, 3) update your health status and healthcare provider information once a year (brief 5 min survey), for up to 10 years, so that we can track how your health changes over time.

What are the surveys all about?
You can do each survey module online or on your smartphone or tablet, at your leisure. Most of them are very basic, but a few require some additional effort. For example, you might have to gather medical history information on yourself or your family members. Some of them may ask for sensitive information such as your quality-of-life after cancer diagnosis or treatment. All of them will help us learn how to improve recommendations and clinical care for people living with cancer.

How often do I have to take these surveys?
You will have an eVisit every year. The first one will be the longest. You can do the surveys all at once or spread it out over time. We will remind you when they are due and when you have new ones to complete by email. Once you finish a survey, you’ll be able to see it on your homepage.

Is my data safe?
Absolutely. We take this VERY seriously and will do everything we can to protect your information and keep it private and secure. Please read the Eureka Privacy Policy.

What is my information used for?
We will use your information for research. We collect information about your background, your health, and your health behaviors in the Eat Move Sleep Study. This information will be used in research analyses that look at data anonymously and in group form. Results of these analyses will be presented in scientific conferences and scientific journal publications. These presentations and publications will never show any information that could identify you.

What about my privacy?
Participation in research involves some loss of privacy. We will do our best to make sure that information about you is kept confidential, but we cannot guarantee total privacy. Some information from your medical records will be collected and used for this study. Therefore, people involved with your future care and insurance may become aware of your participation. Information gathered directly from you by the researchers will be part of your research records but will not be added to your medical record. Your personal information may be given out if required by law.

Authorized representatives from the following organizations may review your research data for the purpose of monitoring or managing the conduct of this study:
- Representatives of the National Institutes of Health
- Representatives of the University of California

Do you follow HIPAA rules?
Electronic Security and Adherence to the HIPAA Privacy Rule: The Eat Move Sleep Study follows the security guidelines of the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). All study data are transmitted, stored, and processed in a secure environment.

How long before we see the results in the form of new cancer treatments or preventions?
It can take many years to analyze collected data and understand it. It will take even more time to develop new treatments and prevention methods. By launching a study of the size and scope of the Eat Move Sleep Study, we hope to accelerate our understanding of cancer progression, quality-of-life, and outcomes. Please visit our study and departmental websites for periodic updates on resources on diet, exercise, and other health habits and cancer survivorship.
